I asked Sheila to guest post for me on the topic of why entrepreneurs should take the time to go away and just relax – Here is her great post.

P.S. I am taking her wise advice.

Entrepreneurs –Take my Rx:  Please, go away!

As a travel advisor, I love to tell people to please, go away!  As an entrepreneur, and one who often burns the candle at both ends to grow my own business, I know how important it is to force a break. We all need to re-energise, unwind, and relax. And when you’re in business for yourself, the boss has to reward the most valued employee – treat yourself right!

According to studies by Ipsos-Reid, Canadians fail to take millions of vacation days every year. In 2005, 23% postponed or cancelled vacations because of work commitments. In 2004, it was 38%.  (That’s 40 million vacation days!) No wonder a 2008 study by Ipsos-Reid reported a growing trend – people wanted more vacation time! And when an online Harris/ Decima poll reported that ¼ of Canadians weren’t taking the full number of vacation days they’ve been allotted, it was no big surprise that 42% of Canadians surveyed said they’re feeling stressed, tired and vacation deprived.

The wonders and restorative powers of a vacation isn’t the stuff of rocket science.  It’s pretty obvious – if you’re feeling tired, feeling stressed at work, feeling like you’re run ragged; take a break, breath, walk on a beach, hit a theme park, and you’ll feel better.

But a recent article in Conde Nast Traveller elevates the importance of taking a vacation to even greater heights. It suggests that “vacations can reduce the risk of heart disease, depression, and a host of other ills—and even slow the aging process.”  Wow – your next vacation might actually save your life!  Sure, your email in-box is full, you have dozens of phone calls to return, and your clients need to be serviced. But really – how can you afford not to take a vacation?

Of course, vacation time is such a precious commodity when we’re you’re in business for yourself. You want to make sure you “spend” your vacation time wisely. You never get to recapture your personal time, so your vacation has to be right the first time – especially since your health is at stake! Extraordinary travel experiences don’t just happen – they are created through collaborative effort.  So, if you’re thinking of your health, and also giving some thought to the kind of memories you’d like to take away from your next vacation, give me a call.  Let’s get started.
